Three questions that remove most confusion
Before comparing prices, ask: who issues the document, what performance is independently assessed, and where can the claim be verified? If a provider cannot answer all three in writing, the credential label is not useful enough to guide a purchase. “Diploma” printed on a page does not by itself mean a government-regulated diploma, and “certified” can describe many different private arrangements.

Use this evidence request before paying
Send one email and require links or documents, not a sales call summary:
- What is the exact legal name of the qualification owner and the document awarded?
- How many hours are live teaching, self-study, observed practice and independent assessment?
- How many dogs must each learner groom, and which coat types or complete-groom tasks are mandatory?
- Who assesses the work, what rubric is used and can a learner appeal?
- If NLQF, CRKBO or another quality label is named, which exact register entry supports the wording?
- What are the complete costs: tools, models, examination, resits, travel, placement and VAT?
Save the answer with the version of the course page you relied on. That creates a decision record if the programme, inclusions or wording changes later.
What NLQF does—and does not—tell you
NLQF makes learning levels easier to compare. Its public register contains private qualifications that have been levelled. A level says something about the complexity and responsibility represented by the learning outcomes; it does not mean that every course at that level has the same teaching hours, salon environment, learner support or job-placement result. Verify the qualification name, owner, status and authorised providers directly in the register.
Also separate NLQF from CRKBO. CRKBO registration concerns education providers and VAT conditions in the Dutch market; it is not a practical dog-grooming skill grade. A provider can accurately mention one register while a reader incorrectly infers a different kind of recognition.
Score the route, not the badge
Give each route 0–2 points for six outcomes: animal-welfare teaching, supervised variety, feedback quality, transparent assessment, credential verification and total-cost clarity. A route with an impressive badge but no observed practice should not beat a transparent programme that documents what you will actually do. Keep the scores and your written deal-breakers next to the price.
Red flags
- Guaranteed professional status after theory-only study.
- A register logo without an exact searchable qualification or provider entry.
- “Unlimited practice” without minimum observed cases per learner.
- No assessment rubric, complaints route or full-cost schedule before payment.
- Testimonials used as evidence for legal recognition or average employment results.

Frequently asked questions
Is a private diploma worthless?
No. It can document assessed learning, but its value depends on transparent outcomes, assessment, issuer reputation and what an employer or client needs.
Does NLQF approve a school as the best provider?
No. NLQF makes the level of learning outcomes comparable. It does not publish a best-school ranking.
Is CRKBO the same as professional accreditation?
No. CRKBO registration has a different purpose and should not be presented as proof of practical grooming competence.
